How do I get a better lawyer for my husband than the public defender assigned to him?

My husbands public defender has not given him reasonable counsel, has threatened and tried to coerce him into signing a plea. When husband refused, the next day he got indicted on 8 more charges. He's been held on a probation hold due to these allegations/charges for 4 months now without his attorney putting a motion for modification of conditions of release. His public defender could care less about defending my husband even going so far as not submitting evidence I gave to him proving my husband's innocence for disclosure. I gave him the evidence almost 3 months ago. All they do is keep continuing his court dates and not affording him necessary tools in which to prepare for his defense at trial. What can I do not being a lawyer, to help my husband?
