Biography
Scott obtained his JD (1988) from Northwestern University School of Law, after serving for 10 years in the United States Marine Corps. While serving in the Marine Corps, Scott obtained his B.A. summa cum laude (1981) from The University of Mississippi with a double major in Political Science and English. Scott was a member of the honor society of Phi Kappa Phi and recipient of the Chancellor’s Award and Naval Institute Award.
Scott has practiced at large prestigious Chicago law firms where he acquired his expertise and his desire for helping entrepreneurs and professionals. He started at SNR Dentons (f/k/a Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal), and then practiced at Fagel & Haber (k/n/a Thompson Coburn) where in addition to his regular practice, he developed a sports practice, and was an NFL agent representing several NFL players.
Scott is the founding partner of Haugh Law Group’s Center for Estate Planning and Asset Preservation. After helping several dozen new clients in the recent financial crisis who were left with next to nothing due to the failure of previous professional advisors, it reinforced Scott’s belief that estate planning is really only valuable if you have an “estate” to leave to your heirs.
While most estate planners focus on what happens after the client passes, Scott’s expertise is in (i) helping clients formulate a plan for building assets, legally protecting them during the client’s lifetime, and then (ii) making sure that the client’s wishes regarding how those assets are preserved, protected and distributed after his/her death are fulfilled.
Scott is a member of the American Bar Association Section of Real Property, Estate and Trust Law and a member of Lawyers With Purpose.
