Biography
An interview of Rajesh Kanuru, Esq. by Huffington Post contributor, Lindsay Rosasco.
Question: What are the driving forces that fuel your commitment to personal injury law?
Answer: I want to make sure that my child is in a safer place than it is now. When I held my son for the first time two years ago, it was a very humbling experience because the only thing I wanted to do was protect him. As a personal injury attorney, I’m able to do my part to protect my family from a variety of dangers out there.
The advantage of personal injury law that drives my commitment to it is that we make sure companies operate fairly, with the consumers’ safety at the forefront of their business, and if they don’t, they have to pay for it. Personal injury attorneys make sure companies are held responsible for their actions when they hurt others, forcing them to change their polices so no one else get injured.
The other thing is that my family is originally from India (my parents came here in 1975), and when I travel, this is one of the greatest motivations for me. There are no protections in place for victims in so many places over the world that I’ve traveled to. No matter how many times I travel to these countries that don’t have these protections in place, it’s always still shocking to see. Working in an area of law that promotes more protection and accountability really fuels my commitment to personal injury law.
Question: That’s a very unique perspective tying into your experience overseas. There are so many personal injury attorneys to choose from; what makes you stand out?
Answer: One of the biggest factors that sets me apart from other personal injury attorneys is that I like to get to know my clients on a personal level. I remember in law school, we learned not to get emotionally attached to our clients or their cases, but I don’t believe that. I take a different approach.
To be the best advocate for my client, I do get emotionally involved, and there’s nothing wrong with that. The personal connections and investments I make in my clients fuels my passion and drive to work tenaciously to win the case.
One way I think of it is, when you call your attorney, do they ask about what’s going on in your life? Do they care about your family, your kids, and work? Those are the things I know about my clients.
Question: I completely agree, Raj; all of this is instantly evident in a conversation with you. Through all of your experience, what is the most shocking and the most rewarding aspect of your job?
Answer: It still shocks me to this day how we see these insurance companies and corporations out there advertising on a regular basis about how compassionate and caring they are - how they put customers first – how they are sensitive to your wants, needs, and safety - but what happens when someone gets inured? Are they there to help and support you in your greatest moment of need?
No; the wall goes up and all the “compassion” leaves, and it becomes simple numbers, simple dollars. It’s appalling.
On the other side of the spectrum, what’s most rewarding and actually the most humbling experience is when we are able to receive a settlement or verdict for our client. It’s humbling to help bring back stability and a sense of normalcy back into their lives.
Question: That does seem like an incredibly humbling part of your job. What would you say you enjoy most about your job?
Answer: I get to help my clients and get to know them as well as family. When their kids get into college and win awards at school, I know about it. I’m there to share the triumphs and highlights of their family’s life. I’m very driven by personal relationships and communication, and as a personal injury attorney, you get very close access to people’s lives that allows you to develop meaningful bonds. The fact that people let you in is so gratifying.
The reason I appreciate this the most is you get to see directly how you’re helping these people, and the sigh of relief they release when they first retain you, from knowing that someone will be there to take care of them, is pretty fulfilling, too.
Question: Thank you for taking the time to do this interview. Any lasting thoughts to share with your readers?
