Biography
Theory of Practice
Mr. Hookano believes that the law does not have to be as adversarial. The parties to a dispute would best be served by resolving their differences outside of court so that everyone can walk away satisfied.
Early Years
Mr. Hookano was born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii. He attended the Kamehameha Schools then received is B.A. in Psychology from Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. After graduating, Mr. Hookano returned to Hawaii to further his education, earning a masters in public administration degree from the University of Hawaii and his law degree from the William S. Richardson School of Law.
Legal Career
After graduating from law school, Mr. Hookano served as the legal specialist to the Office of the County Clerk on the Island of Hawaii. While there he advised the clerk and members of the Hawaii County Council on their legal rights and responsibilities. He also served as the attorney to the Charter Commission which convenes once every ten years to review and revise the county's governing document.
Mr. Hookano has also served as an administrator for the Hawaii State Bar Association, organizing seminars for Hawaii's attorneys and other community programs. In addition, he has served as a member of the board of directors for the Hawaii County Bar Association, the Chair of the HSBA Government Lawyers Section, and as President of the HSBA Young Lawyers Division.
Military Career
In 2009, Mr. Hookano commissioned as a First Lieutenant in the Hawaii Army National Guard, Judge Advocate General's Corps. He graduated from the Judge Advocate Officer Basic Course on the Commandant's List and was assigned to the 29th Infantry Brigade as an operational law attorney. He has also served as a legal assistance attorney with the 25th Infantry Division, assisting more than 500 Soldiers and their dependents with their legal matters. Most recently Mr. Hookano has served as the acting State Staff Judge Advocate for the Hawaii National Guard.
