Biography
James A. Rodriguez was licensed to practice law in the State of Texas on November 8, 2008. A graduate of St. Mary’s University School of Law, James earned several distinctions as a law student including selection for membership in the Phi Delta Phi honors fraternity and the Order of Barristers. James was also selected for the coveted Patricia Scott Award as the best competitive oral advocate in 2008 for his participation on the St. Mary’s External Advocacy Program Moot Court Team.
James has always been a solo practitioner and has chosen to focus his practice on family law, probate and civil litigation. He prides himself on explaining every aspect of a case to his clients to promote understanding of the legal system and give the client insight into the processes that have such an important effect on their lives. James also regularly invites law students to intern with him and learn the practical aspects of the practice of law by attending hearings, conferring with opposing counsel, and meeting with and interviewing clients.
In addition to his private practice, he was honored to be sworn in as the first Presiding Judge of the Municipal Court of Von Ormy, a new city located in southern Bexar County, in 2010. Since that time, James has overseen the growth of that court from a small caseload of 20 to 30 cases per month to an average of more than 250 cases per month. The Municipal Court of Von Ormy is now one of the most active small-town municipal courts in Bexar County and James makes every effort to ensure that the citizens who are required to attend his Court feel that they have been fairly dealt with and that their own needs and concerns have been heard and addressed.
Since joining the San Antonio Bar Association in 2008, James has been active on several committees including the District Courts Committee, the Municipal and Justice of the Peace Courts Committee, the Publications Committee, and the Mentoring Committee. James was in the inaugural class of the Mentoring Committee as a mentee and was then asked to become a mentor the following year. He enjoys assisting new attorneys in their transition to practice by sharing his experiences in opening his own solo practice.
James is also a passionate supporter of the San Antonio Bar Association’s Community Justice Program and is a regular volunteer at the program’s family law, wills, and veteran’s clinics. The Community Justice Program recognized James as the 2011 Pro Bono Attorney of the Year and again as the August 2012 Volunteer of the Month. He strongly believes that a lawyer’s calling should include reaching out to help those less fortunate and constantly encourages other attorneys to give just a few hours of their time to make a profound difference in a person’s life.
Away from the legal arena, James is also a regular volunteer with KLRN, the San Antonio public broadcasting station, and serves on their Volunteer Advisory Council. He is also an advisor and mentor to young teenagers through the International Order of DeMolay youth fraternity and has served on numerous non-profit boards as an officer or member, including the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Childrenin Dallas, the Scottish Rite Dormitory for Women at the University of Texas at Austin, the Scottish Rite Library and Museum in San Antonio, and the Scottish Rite Learning Center of South Texas for children with dyslexia, dysgraphia, and dyscalcula.
